Terrazzo is one of the world’s oldest and most enduring flooring systems — a seamless composite of marble, granite, quartz, or glass chips set in cement or epoxy and ground to a flawless, polished finish. Centis Tile & Terrazzo has been crafting bespoke terrazzo floors since 1953, and it remains our proudest signature service.

Unlike tile, terrazzo offers a completely seamless surface with no grout lines to collect dirt or bacteria — making it ideal for hospitals, airports, schools, and high-traffic public institutions. Properly maintained terrazzo floors last a century or more, making them one of the most sustainable flooring choices available.

We offer both traditional cementitious terrazzo and modern epoxy terrazzo systems, each with thousands of aggregate and colour combinations. Whether you need a clean, neutral palette for a corporate lobby or a complex inlaid logo for a landmark institution, our crew delivers with precision.

History

A Timeless Tradition

Ancient Origins

Terrazzo originated in Venice, Italy over 500 years ago when workers began using marble chip offcuts set in clay to create economical yet beautiful floors. The Venetian tradition spread across Europe and eventually the world, arriving in North America in the early 1900s.

20th Century Revival

The introduction of white Portland cement and mechanized grinding equipment transformed terrazzo into a precision craft. It became the flooring standard for government buildings, airports, schools, and hospitals across North America through the mid-century era.

Modern Epoxy Systems

Today’s epoxy terrazzo systems allow for thinner profiles (as little as 3/8”), more vivid colours, and greater design flexibility — making terrazzo ideal for renovation projects where structural load or floor height is a concern.
